Ashok Chavan Resigns from Congress as Maharashtra Chief Minister Amid BJP Talks Speculation

According to sources, a senior leader may receive a ticket to the Rajya Sabha. This would mark the second major switch in Maharashtra, following the departure of Congress leader Milind Deora, who joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena after leaving the party.

BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the speculation about the senior leader joining the party, stating that several good leaders from Congress are in touch with BJP and expressing his confidence in some big faces joining Congress. There are reports of differences between the senior leader and state party chief Nana Patole regarding the selection of candidates, which may have influenced the decision to switch sides.

This development occurs against the backdrop of the Maha Vikas Aghadi facing a significant electoral challenge. Mr. Ashok Chavan has had an eventful political journey, starting as a student leader and progressing to key positions in the Congress, including Maharashtra Congress chief.

He has served as an MP from Nanded, been a member of both state legislature houses, and held the Chief Minister post after the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. However, his stint was short-lived as he was forced to step down amidst corruption allegations related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam.

In response to his decision to switch parties, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the move, using a metaphorical “washing machine” reference often utilized by Congress to accuse the BJP of stalling criminal investigations against Opposition leaders who switch to their side. He expressed his disappointment and criticized the individuals who leave a party that has supported them, emphasizing the opportunities it opens up for others.
