Government Paralyzed After Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest: High Court admin, April 29, 2024 The Delhi High Court has stated that Arvind Kejriwal’s absence as Chief Minister cannot deprive children of their free textbooks, writing material, and uniforms. The court emphasized that the role of Chief Minister is not simply ceremonial and requires the office holder to be available around the clock. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) downplayed the court’s comments, asserting that Kejriwal will remain as Chief Minister, the High Court has dismissed three petitions seeking his removal from office. The court also highlighted the admission by Delhi’s Urban Development Minister, Saurabh Bhardwaj, that any increase in the financial power of the MCD commissioner requires approval from Mr. Kejriwal, which signifies a standstill in the functioning of the Delhi government. During a hearing, the High Court criticized Kejriwal and the Delhi government for failing to provide textbooks, in response to a petition stating that nearly two lakh students lacked essential amenities at the beginning of the academic year due to administrative hurdles. The judges emphasized that Kejriwal’s insistence on retaining the post even after his arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case prioritizes political interests over national interests. The Lieutenant Governor’s office accused the AAP-led Delhi government and Saurabh Bhardwaj of delaying a proposal to temporarily enhance the financial powers of the MCD Commissioner, leading to delays in crucial projects linked to education, health, and sanitation.
