Canada’s Opposition Leader Expelled from House for Calling Justin Trudeau “Wacko

Canada’s opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, recently referred to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “wacko”. The Conservative Party, currently ahead in the polls, has been criticizing the Liberal government’s carbon tax, blaming it for causing inflation. During a session in the House of Commons, Poilievre questioned Trudeau on when the “wacko policy” would come to an end, prompting Speaker Greg Fergus, a Liberal, to deem the comment unparliamentary and unacceptable.

Despite being asked four times to withdraw the comment, Poilievre declined and was subsequently ordered to leave the House for the rest of the day’s sitting. Following the incident, Poilievre and most of his party members exited the House. Trudeau, who has a strained relationship with Poilievre, accused the opposition leader of associating with far-right groups and labeled it as irresponsible and dangerous for democracy.

Ejections from the House are uncommon, and the speaker’s office did not immediately comment on the last instance of an official opposition leader being expelled. The next election is expected to take place by late October 2025, and recent public opinion surveys suggest a potential win for the Conservatives over the Liberals, who have been in power since November 2015.
