BJP’s Brij Bhushan implicated in sexual harassment by wrestlers, may not run for elections: Sources

The BJP has announced Karan Bhushan Singh as its candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj, ending speculation surrounding the seat and its current MP. Dinesh Pratap Singh has been named as the BJP candidate from Rae Bareli, a Congress stronghold. The Congress is yet to announce its candidate for the Rae Bareli seat, previously held by Sonia Gandhi.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a six-time MP from Kaiserganj, faced political setbacks due to sexual harassment allegations. Despite this, the BJP acknowledges his political influence in the area and has chosen his son as his replacement. Karan Bhushan Singh heads the Uttar Pradesh wrestling body and is set to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The last date for filing nominations for the Kaiserganj seat is tomorrow, and the elections are scheduled for May 20. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has served as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India for over a decade, faced allegations of sexual harassment from some of the country’s top wrestlers, leading to protests in the national capital last year. He has denied the allegations, and the case is pending before a Delhi court.

Last month, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had blamed the media for the delay in the announcement of the BJP’s candidate for Kaiserganj, stating that the media was causing the delay.
