Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Who Is KL Sharma, Congress’ Amethi Pick to Face Smriti Irani?

The decision to announce Rahul Gandhi as the party candidate from Raebareli was made this morning, bringing an end to weeks of anticipation. This announcement comes after Rahul Gandhi’s unexpected loss in the family bastion, Amethi, to the BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019.

KL Sharma expressed his gratitude to the party for giving him the opportunity to contest from Amethi, a seat that holds significance as the family bastion of the Gandhis in Uttar Pradesh. He acknowledged the support of key party members including Khargeji, Sonia ji, Rahul ji, and Priyanka ji and pledged to work hard, emphasizing his 40 years of service in the constituency.

Responding to BJP’s allegations that the Gandhis opted out of Amethi out of fear, KL Sharma defended Rahul Gandhi, stating that he is dedicated to fighting for the entire country and does not shy away from challenges. Kishori Lal Sharma has been associated with Amethi since 1987 and has been actively involved with the party in the constituency.

Sources indicate that he had a close relationship with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and his bond with the Gandhi family strengthened following Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991. Additionally, it is noted that KL Sharma played a crucial role in Sonia Gandhi’s victory from Amethi in 1999, ultimately securing her a seat in Parliament.

Following Sonia Gandhi’s resignation from the seat for her son Rahul, Mr. Sharma managed party affairs in both Amethi and Raebareili.
