Arrest Made After Pune MLA’s Nephew’s SUV Hits Bike, Killing 1 on National Highway

Mayur Mohite has been arrested and an ongoing investigation is being conducted, according to the police. He is the nephew of Dilip Mohite Patil, an MLA from Pune district’s Khed Alandi Assembly segment, associated with the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The victim in the case has been identified as Om Bhalerao.

It was reported by a police officer that the Toyota Fortuner SUV driven by Mayur Mohite was traveling on the wrong side and collided head-on with a bike. The police have stated that the investigation is still ongoing. Following the accident, the legislator made a statement to the media emphasizing that his nephew did not flee the scene and also stating that he was not intoxicated.

This incident has brought attention once again to the issue of rash driving in Pune. The spotlight on this issue was heightened last month when two 24-year-old software engineers lost their lives in an accident involving a speeding Porsche allegedly driven by the 17-year-old son of a prominent realtor. The accused, who was reportedly driving under the influence, was granted bail within 15 hours of the accident, a move widely criticized as lenient.

This led to national outrage and prompted the Juvenile Justice Board to revise its order and send the accused to an observation home. Subsequently, police have discovered evidence of attempted cover-up by the teen’s family members and have made several arrests.
