Zika Virus: Symptoms and Treatment – Everything You Need to Know admin, July 4, 2024 Zika Virus Causes, Alerts: The Zika virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. In response to the increasing number of Zika virus cases, a cautionary advisory has been issued to all states, urging them to enhance their monitoring efforts. A total of eight cases have been reported, with six from Pune, one each from Kolhapur and Sangamner, and two involving pregnant women. The virus was first identified in 1947 in Uganda and has since spread to various regions including Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Americas. It can also be transmitted through sexual contact or from a mother to her fetus during pregnancy. Infections during pregnancy can lead to birth defects, congenital malformations, preterm birth, and miscarriage. Common symptoms of the virus, which typically manifest 3-14 days after infection, include rash, fever, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache. These symptoms usually last between 2-7 days, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Individuals experiencing symptoms such as rash, fever, or joint pain are advised to rest, stay hydrated, and take antipyretics and/or analgesics as needed. However, they should avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs due to the risk of bleeding in cases of dengue virus infection. Patients are also encouraged to seek medical advice if their symptoms worsen. As of now, there is no vaccine available for the prevention or treatment of Zika virus infection. It is recommended to avoid traveling to areas and countries with ongoing outbreaks. health and wellness
