During a hearing by a nine-judge constitution bench regarding the legislative power of states to regulate sale and manufacture of industrial alcohol, the Chief Justice raised the issue with Mr Mehta, the Solicitor General. Mr Mehta acknowledged the matter and informed the court that he had asked unrelated lawyers to vacate their seats for the juniors. Following this, the Chief Justice instructed the court master to arrange seating for the young lawyers, and after the lunch break, a row of stools appeared in the courtroom. The Chief Justice personally inspected the seating arrangement to ensure it was suitable. The gesture was widely appreciated by those present, including Mr Mehta, who described the Chief Justice as an epitome of generosity.
