The incident occurred due to the flooding of the Rau’s IAS Study Circle building basement in Old Rajinder Nagar, a central Delhi coaching hub, during heavy rain on July 27. The students called for an independent investigation and accountability from authorities responsible for maintaining drainage and sewage systems. They also stressed the need for measures focusing on public safety and support for affected families. In their letter, the students listed seven demands, including guidelines for coaching institutes and affordable libraries. They emphasized the need for an immediate review and improvement of disaster mitigation infrastructure and emergency response protocols in educational institutions and densely populated areas in Delhi. Additionally, they requested the provision of adequate support and compensation for the families of the deceased students and survivors affected by the incident. The students also called for the establishment of guidelines for operating coaching institutes, including regulations on paying guest rentals and a cap on charges. They urged the government to provide libraries with affordable fees to ensure a safe and conducive environment for aspiring students to study. Comprehensive urban planning was also highlighted as one of their demands in the letter.
